Overview:
This is a Senior Counsel or Counsel position based in San Ramon, California in the Litigation Management Group of the Downstream, Chemicals & Midstream Law Department, providing litigation-management services to all Downstream, Chemicals & Midstream businesses.  The lawyers in this group have expertise in litigation and arbitration and manage a wide variety of matters, including commercial, environmental, PMPA, toxic tort, personal injury, intellectual property, employment, and government and internal investigations.  The lawyers work closely with law management, business clients and outside counsel.  The position reports to Chevron U.S.A. Managing Counsel, Litigation in San Ramon, California.

 

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
• Managing a wide variety of U.S. and international complex litigation, arbitrations, investigations, and response to government and other third-party subpoenas.
• Working with company business people and outside counsel to develop and implement strategy consistent with business objectives and company litigation principles.
• Managing discovery, including interviews, depositions, interrogatories and document production and maximizing effective use of available in-house resources and technology.  Expertise with electronic discovery and management of the discovery process a must.
• Providing timely, fit-for-purpose oral and written advice and reports to business clients and law management.
• Facilitating innovative resolutions to disputes, utilizing ADR when appropriate.
• Directing and participating in incident investigations.
• Effectively identifying, partnering with and managing outside counsel, including establishing and managing outside counsel budget and controlling costs.
• Achieving results consistent with the Chevron Way, promoting a culture of compliance, and maintaining the highest professional standards.


Required Qualifications:
• Juris Doctor and Membership in California State Bar, or compliance with California Bar's requirements for in-house practitioners.
• 8+ years’ experience in litigation, with primary responsibility for significant claims and cases.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate complex disputes and issues.
• Premier written and oral communications skills.
• Highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a team environment and partnering with clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff.
• Ability to effectively manage a high volume of complex and diverse matters.
• Exceptional knowledge of law pertaining to electronic-discovery issues.
• Sense of humor and ability to be a team player.


Preferred Qualifications:
• First-chair trial experience.
• Extensive experience in complex commercial litigation, employment litigation, class action claims, and environmental/toxic tort litigation.
• Experience with incident investigations.

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
