Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Reliability Machinery Engineer in Richmond, CA through January 30th, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time).


Chevron’s Richmond Refinery is located in the Bay Area CA area.  Reliability is recognized as a key to operational excellence, and the Reliability Team at the Refinery  assists in identifying and solving equipment issues as they relate to our people, processes and equipment reliability strategy.



High Level Job Description/Scope

Key Job Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to the following:

• Work with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Chevron Research and Rotating Equipment Reliability personnel to increase

machinery MTBF, minimize equipment down time, and increase Mechanical or Operational availability. This involves frequent

contact with personnel, installed machinery assets, reviewing equipment histories and using Reliability Analysis Tools to

propose and implement necessary changes.

Provide troubleshooting, data and failure analysis support on new and existing equipment. Methodical approach for identifying

causes and contributing factors, along with identifying and tracking corrective actions for each cause. Use of personal

knowledge and resourcing skills to address technical aspects of RCFA. Formal training in RCFA methods (i.e., TapRoot,

Equifactor, TOP, PROACT, Why-Tree,..).

• Use of appropriate metrics for identifying opportunity areas based on cost/benefit. Knowledge of which measures to use for

different types of equipment and focusing on "biggest bang for the buck". Must have the ability to articulate, present and sell

ideas or solutions to various levels and functions within the Refinery.

• Prepare, review and approve machinery or component purchase specifications. This may include preparation of engineering,

operating, maintenance or reliability standards, policies and instructions within the refinery or by working with peers and

management for systemic and industry standards.

• Implementation of corrective actions. Development of cost estimates, performance specifications, procedures, contracts and

work orders. Requires familiarity with vendors/suppliers for specific jobs, and QA/QC with OEM’s and service providers during

purchase, fabrication or construction periods. Assure proper installation, commissioning, maintenance and operator training, as

well as follow-up testing, check lists, repair reports, etc. to enable sustained performance of machinery assets.

• Employing lessons learned from industry and Chevron. Proactively applies proven solutions to areas where they will provide

benefit before problems occur. Use reliability analysis tools and techniques to create and apply systemic solutions to avoid

repetitive machinery failures.


Responsibilities for this positioin may include but not limited to:

  • The Machinery Reliability Engineer provides engineering support for the safe, reliable operation and maintenance of rotating and

    reciprocating machinery and machinery systems in the Refinery. Support includes all phases of machinery engineering (concept

    development, scoping, equipment application, specification, selection, bid analysis, shop testing, field start up, troubleshooting,

    and failure analysis) including reliability analysis. Reliability analysis tools to be utilized will include Weibull, AMSAA Growth

    Modeling, Cost/Benefit, et al. in order to build a case for change in design, QA/QC, operating or maintenance procedures,

    preventative or predictive maintenance activities.

    Equipment includes pumps, centrifugal and axial compressors, expanders, steam and gas turbines, motors, generators, gears,

    fans, gearboxes and support systems (control systems, vibration monitors and protection systems). Understand and apply RER

    philosophies of machinery surveillance, protection, design review, quality control/assurance, and record keeping.

    Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

    • A minimum of 10 years of machinery engineering experience in the chemical, petrochemical, refining or power industries.

     Demonstrated experience working with Operations and Maintenance to troubleshoot machinery problems

  • Proven strong oral and written communication skills.  Ability to make effective presentations to a wide range audience including management, technical, and non-technical levels.
  • Demonstrated basic understanding of process equipment (fixed, rotating, instrument, and electrical).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ·  10 years of engineering experience.
  • ·  Experience applying Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) fundamentals.
  • ·  Incident investigation experience relating to equipment failures

    • Experience in start-up, commissioning and acceptance testing of equipment

    • Broad machinery, and machinery support systems experience in a petrochemical or power plant environment.

    • Experience should include a strong competency on centrifugal and reciprocating compressors performance and reliability.
