Overview:

 

The Plant Support Designs Tank Engineer, as an essential partner and member of the Designs Engineering Group, plays a key role in supporting the refinery’s mission to operate safely, optimally, reliably, predictably, and without incident at the lowest sustainable cost. This involves taking a lead role in understanding and evaluating plant performance, working closely with Operations and Maintenance to establish priorities for the work and following through with proactive design and execution of storage tank projects and improvements.

 

 

The Plant Support Designs Tank Engineer, as an essential partner and member of the Designs Engineering Group, plays a key role in supporting the refinery’s mission to operate safely, optimally, reliably, predictably, and without incident at the lowest sustainable cost. This involves taking a lead role in understanding and evaluating plant performance, working closely with Operations and Maintenance to establish priorities for the work and following through with proactive design and execution of storage tank projects and improvements.

Responsibilities for this position include but not limited to:

 

  • Continuously works to improve personal and process safety performance at the refinery and understands that all injuries, environmental issues, or business losses are preventable through proper planning and risk recognition.
  • Provides Engineering support to the refinery’s Tanks Maintenance program.
  • Provides in depth reviews of tank calculations and drawings.
  • Interprets and applies API 653/650 and API 2000 to refinery tanks.
  • Reviews and verifies inspection reports.
  • Provides technical guidance to QA/QC inspector.
  • Field verifies compliance with drawings and calculations.
  • Actively participates in the planning and execution of tank outages, both planned and unplanned.
  • Answers technical inquiries, makes technical recommendations, provides tank system troubleshooting, improves Designs Engineering tools for tank analysis.
  • Provides technical mentoring of new designs engineers.
  • Develops relationships with customers and peer support groups inside the refinery to better understand their needs and meet expectations. These include, but are not limited to: Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Process Engineering, Small/Major Capital Projects, and others within the Designs Engineering organization.
  • Shows leadership by representing the Designs Engineering organization to the rest of the refinery with integrity, trust, diversity, ingenuity, meeting commitments, fostering teamwork, and character (Chevron Way Values).
  • Proactively communicates information and opportunities, both written and orally, to all levels of the
  • organization.
  • Provides plant engineering support for the routine daily operation of all tanks within the refinery.
  • Develops and manages engineering work orders with safety and reliability as the overshadowing requirements for the person completing the work in the field and the end user.
  • Scopes/troubleshoots tanks mechanical problems and issues, develops alternatives, and proposes and implements solutions for long term safety and reliability.
  • Carries out various studies to improve plant safety, reliability, and economics.
  • Provides engineering analysis and evaluation of small projects typically <$2MM and is expected to execute some small projects from scope development to completion in the field.
  • Responsible for personal improvement of both soft and technical skills through formal and informal training.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ work experience in a refinery, oil and gas facility, petrochemical plant, or similar industrial environment in alignment with the design and construction of API Storage Tanks.
  • Must be very familiar with API 653/650 and API 2000 for tanks

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experiences working in a crude oil refinery
  • Basic understanding of estimating tools and cost control.
  • Basic understanding of gated work processes for project planning and execution.
  • Basic understanding of refinery processes and the interactions between refinery units.

 

Critical Skills / Selection Criteria:

 

 Technical Skills and Experience:

  • Experience as a Facilities, Designs or Project Engineer  
  • Minimum of 3 years’ related work experience in tank design and repair including engineering analysis, design, specification, installation, testing, start-up, and maintenance support.
  • Experience with industry standards such as API-650/653 & 2000, ASME Section VIII & IV, ASTM, NBIC, AISC, ASCE.
  • Demonstrated application of technical concepts/standards.
  • Familiar with piping systems and codes, pressure vessel code, hot tap methods, leak seal methods, hydraulic calculation, process safety information, management of change work process.  
  • Have a basic understanding of refinery/chemical processes/equipment and understanding of the interaction between refinery units and tank storage.
  • Familiar piping / mechanical design standards and practices.
  • Experience with Chevron Corporate Engineering Tank Standards.
  • Proven ability to understand and analyze technical issues in storage tank operations. 
  • Ability to perform tank calculations including, but not limited to shell thickness, floating suction, wind girder and venting calculations.
  • Ability to read P&ID’s (piping & instrument diagrams), plot plans, piping, and structural drawings.
