Overview:

This position is for an experienced geoscientist in the ETC Earth Science Strategic Research Unit, on a Team that includes  ~15 Researchers.  The Modeling and Inversion (M&I) Interpretive Imaging Researcher will be expected to leverage a broad skill base, including: rock physics, petrophysics, geomechanics, earth model building, finite difference modeling, imaging, and inversion.  These skills will be applied to research, develop, and initiate projects within specific geophysical areas of Interpretive Imaging strategic strength such as integrated reservoir geophysics, interactive interpretive imaging and Full Waveform Inversion, and into interdisciplinary reservoir engineering, subsurface integrity, and geostatistical projects.  The M&I researcher will therefore have to have a broad and deep expertise, and an inquisitive multidisciplinary approach. The researcher should be capable of analyzing business challenges for possible technical solutions, proposing investigative solutions, generating new ideas, communicating concepts, and reducing theory to practice.

 

The ideal candidate will have experience in fundamental research or technology development and a demonstrated ability to solve difficult problems through novel methods.  He/she will be required to contribute to the strategic vision for Earth Science, a critical role during Digital Transformation and todays changing oil and energy landscape.  The selected candidate will apply novel and innovative technologies to problems in seismic imaging, interpretation, subsurface characterization and reservoir production prediction.   He/she should have a demonstrated capacity to interact with other Strategic Research and Technology Development teams, business units, and external partners.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum of a PhD in Earth Sciences
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in the oil industry
  • In depth understanding of seismic wave propagation, rock physics, modeling, imaging, AVO/AVA, finite difference methods, geomechanics, stratigraphy,  well logs, petrophysics, and inversion. 
  • Demonstrated proficiency implementing modeling and inversion software. 
  • Computer programming proficiency including Fortran, C, scripting, parallel programming on shared and distributed architectures.
  • Record of patents and/or publications demonstrating ability to solve important problems with technical innovation.
  • Record of effectively partnering with vendors, external Labs, and Universities on project work.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience with Petrel, Seispace and GOCAD usage/integration
  • Experience with Julia and Python scripting languages

 

Relocation Options:

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters.
