OVERVIEW: 

We are seeking a subject matter expert in mineralogy and pore characterization who will perform value-adding research to Chevron’s oil and gas assets.  The successful candidate will research and integrate advances in rock property characterization that includes mineral and pore characterization, clay mineralogy, cation exchange capacity, fabric analysis, and any additional relevant areas.  The candidate should have a strong understanding of how measured rock properties relate to petrophysical modeling.  An expectation of the role is to propose new research ideas through functional focus areas, that benefit the company across multiple disciplines in support of Chevron Business Unit priorities.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD in Earth Science-related field.  
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Mineral Characterization.
  • Fundamental understanding of X-ray diffraction (XRD), clay mineralogy, mineralogy, geology including sedimentology, and petrology.   
  • Fundamental understanding and experience in XRD laboratory methods and procedures and ability to improve laboratory capabilities.  
  • Fundamental understanding of quantitative mineral analysis of sedimentary rocks, and clay separates by XRD. 
  • Ability to integrate mineral and chemistry data and apply to petrophysical log interpretations.
  • Familiarity with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.  
  • Knowledge of basic core analysis procedures.  
  • Knowledge of additional analytical methods, such as FTIR, mass-spectrometry, cation exchange capacity (CEC), small angle scattering techniques, and gas adsorption analysis.
  • Strong computer skills are required which includes Microsoft Office suite and database management proficiency
