Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:



  • Conduct experimental research by designing relevant studies, collect and analyze data, and interpret results to stakeholders.
  • Conduct simulator based research on training methods that are effective with refinery operations.

Competency Development

  • Develop, maintain, and use performance descriptions, measurement tools and human factors techniques to develop complex training scenarios.
  • Develop and maintain performance assessment tools and strategies to ensure learner progress, competency, and capability.
  • Assist in the development of training verification and validation requirements to assess and demonstrate effectiveness of training programs.
  • Work closely with instructional designers and subject matter experts to refine, develop, implement and evaluate curriculum.
  • Validate the effectiveness of simulation strategy using assessment and metrics tools.

Safety and Investigations

  • Apply human centered failure analysis and categorization methodologies to new and pre-existing risk assessment and incident investigation processes.
  • Assist in the correct identification of current and potential human failure root causes, such as errors (skills and mistakes) and procedural non-compliance (routine, situational, exceptional).
  • Propose Human Factors related projects that support incident reduction and improve understanding of human performance bottlenecks.
  • Assist in the interpretation and compliance of PSM human factors regulations.

Analysis and Engineering

  • Use of human factors collection techniques, hierarchical and cognitive task analysis and user needs analysis to serve as logical structures for systematically collecting high value information used in procedural and learner centered development processes.
  • Collaborate with design groups to ensure engineering compliance with Human Factors best practices and standards.
  • Develop verification and validation requirements for the development and improvement of current and future human machine interfaces.
  • Disseminate the most current Human Factors knowledge such as situation awareness, process safety, training techniques, and general Human Factors and Human Computer Interaction practices and their applicability to console operator training.



Required Qualifications:


  • Master's Degree required wiith a concentration or extensive work in human factors, industrial engineering, cognitive engineering, experimental psychology, and/or human-computer interaction
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Past human behavior research experience in simulation (i.e. process control, aviation and aerospace, automotive, etc.)
  • Experience conducting task analyses (Hierarchical, Job, Cognitive task analyses, etc.)
  • Experience conducting user research
  • Experience in each of the usability and software engineering cycle phases (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation)
  • Experience in crude oil refining
  • Experience with working in an interdisciplinary setting (researchers, engineers, technical editors, etc.).
  • Must be comfortable with the collection, compilation, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data in accordance with statistical best practices (at a minimum computation of descriptive statistics).
  • Strong analytical and statistical analysis skills, ability to think in linear/process oriented manner
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a positive “customer service” attitude, good team player
  • Effective time management and problem solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation, and facilitation skills.
